It has been years since our office switched from using traditional film x-rays, to digital x-rays. The acuity of the sensors is so good that we are able to turn down the x-ray generator up to 90% compared to traditional D-Speed film. Plus, rather than squinting at a tiny piece of film, we are able to expand the image and display it on a large screen. To this add contrast filters to the high resolution image, and we are able to see more than we have ever done before.
We also have a digital panoramic x-ray. This scan takes less than 6 seconds to complete, and reduces the number of times we have to stick the regular x-ray sensor in your mouth. This single image even shows as far back as your wisdom teeth, and is still only 75% of the radiation of a small D-speed film x-ray.
Despite the reduced radiation afforded by this technology, our office is still committed to taking x-rays only as needed. Our decision to take an image is based individually on each patient, and their specific needs.
